Woodland Neuk

The Brief

The garden belonged to a lived in family home that had been through major renovations, including a septic tank installation, and had suffered for it. What should have been a real asset, a sloped plot backing onto a woodland wildlife reserve, had gone untapped. The brief was to turn it into somewhere the family could actually use, for dining, entertaining, and giving the children and dogs room to roam.

Rather than fighting the slope, the design built around it. Retaining walls tier the garden into distinct, usable zones instead of one flat space. A natural stone patio in the east corner handles entertaining, a lowered patio at the back of the house takes care of everyday dining, and redesigned flower beds tie the two together. The north corner becomes a productive space, with an orchard meadow, raised beds and a large greenhouse, while the west corner introduces a natural stone pond with a cascading waterfall and a hidden, dry stone fire pit seating area tucked among the trees.

The Result

What started as a garden worn down by building work is now a complete masterplan, one that finally makes the most of its slope, its woodland setting and the wildlife on its doorstep. It's a design pack ready to be built out zone by zone, giving the family a clear route from where the garden is now to where it's meant to be.
